But we would be making a mistake, because a discontinuity in the field does not imply a discontinuity in pressure. The pressure could be uniform in the whole region of interest. And if we have a region with uniform pressure and a region with uniform density, we could have a uniform mass distribution with no regions of high density or low density. However, the situation could be more interesting, and in fact this is what I suspect to be happening in QM. If you want a situation where the pressure is uniform in the region of interest, but the mass density (or equivalently the pressure) has a jump in the singularity, then you could imagine that the original state was an ensemble of particles of different masses, and that in some particular, low-energy state (the state of a single particle) the mass of that particle jumped. The pressure is uniform, and the mass density is concentrated in the singularity. And so it is not so much a matter of saying what we are going to do, but rather what we can do, and in this case it would seem that this would be the natural thing to do. A particle of the mass of a nucleus in free space will move with the speed of light. However, one could imagine making the pressure uniform in the region of interest by putting together particles of masses corresponding to different energy levels.
